Web Page Redesign 2023

redesign2023 screenshot1b

The current version of this site was made using Blocs (version 4 and later version 5, the Plus version is nice, but not needed for this, though). I also utilize the Blocs addon Volt CMS. I also had fun creating the responsive "burger" menu, first manually, then I discovered the Bric (addon) Easy Burger.

The background image used for the front page hero section, is one of my favorite wallpapers, made by Malkowitch. Thanks! ☺️

The logo is designed with assistance and help from a friend named Daniel. 👍👏☕️

(I also tried out designs for this site in Blocs version 1 and 2, but back then, I gave up on this. Blocs is much more mature these days.)

Never Released Designs

I planned on moving away from RapidWeaver many times. I tried various different technologies. So, this site/blog has been developed in various forms, without being published, for many years. 😅

Besides writing my own CMS in Ruby (not really usable, but I did learn Ruby), for a long time I was working on a similar design as my company website, Luminated.no, which is built in the static page generator Hugo. The screenshot is from this never-released version of flips' Hideout.

I've also been trying out various CMS and blog solution, HTMLy, Subrion, Pubvana, Grav, October CMS, ClassicPress and Wordpress.

Previous iteration (2010–2023)

Back in 2010 I moved from my own custom hand coded HTML to a site built using RapidWeaver for Mac OS X.

Allthough I kinda preferred the older design (as I also always prefer dark mode), this was good for learning and writing content, and it worked remarkably well on smaller screens, despite being from the pre-responsive design era.

Before the Luminated.net era, this page, flips' Hideout, was hosted at a different domain (pbnett.org, abandoned many years ago).

1996–2010, HTML v3.2

The classic, pre-millenial version of my site was custom hand coded HTML, using Server Side Includes (SSI). Written in Vi(m) and Emacs. This version of flips' Hideout was HTML v3.2 compliant, as in pre-CSS era, table based layout.
The logo was created in GIMP, one of the default effects. I actually do like this design still today ... ☺️ The design was efficient, and the counter was a very simple cgi script.

The content started out being about topics I cared about and stuff I learnt myself. So I studied Linux and UNIX stuff, and I worked with UNIX (Sun) and later Linux professionally. I read lots of books, and I tested and used various software.

Earliest capture at Wayback Machine is from January 6th 2000. The page was probably up in 1996. (I don't remember the exact date.)
